Robert Lindale Brown: A Life of Service and Devotion

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Lindale Brown, a devoted husband, father, and patriot who left an indelible mark on those whose lives he touched. Born in 1917 in Evanston, Illinois, Robert grew up to become a historian, a Marine Corps officer, and a dedicated public servant.

Throughout his life, Robert was blessed with a loving family that brought him joy and support. He is survived by his beloved wife, Alda; his children, Eric, Lucy, Arlo, and Robert Jr.; and 16 grandchildren, including Gail Dudley, who resided with her grandmother. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren and two devoted caretakers, Deborah J. Ferrara and Rebecca B. Miller.

Robert's life was marked by his unwavering commitment to serving others. As a Marine Corps officer, he fought bravely in World War II, serving as a Japanese interpreter in the First Marine Division during the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. After the war, he continued his education, earning graduate degrees from the universities of Colorado and Columbia.

In addition to his military service, Robert was a dedicated public servant who gave 22 years of his life to serving his country as an officer with the Central Intelligence Agency. During this time, he held posts in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Munich, and Saigon, where he played a vital role in advancing American interests during the Vietnam War.

After retiring from government service, Robert returned to Mathews, Virginia, where he became actively involved in his local community. He joined the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, served as a Cub Scoutmaster, and contributed to his church, Kingston Parish, where he held the position of senior warden.

Robert's love for history led him to write a book, 'Old Kingston Parish 1652-1976,' which was published in celebration of the Bicentennial. This book is a testament to his dedication to preserving the heritage of his community and honoring those who have gone before us.

Throughout his life, Robert was a shining example of devotion, service, and love for family and country. His passing leaves a great void in the lives of those who knew him, but we take comfort in the knowledge that he is now at peace, surrounded by loved ones who have gone before him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at Peninsula Funeral Home, with Rev. Boyd officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robert's name to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad or Kingston Parish.
